Phil Katz founded PKWARE, Inc. in 1986 and was the author of the world-renowned PKZIP/UNZIP programs. He was born November 3, 1962 and passed away April 14, 2000. Phil was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Computer Science Engineering program.
Phil’s contributions to the computer industry were many, including work with Bulletin Board Systems, as well as many computer user groups and support forums. His decision to dedicate the .ZIP extension and file format specification to the public domain helped the .ZIP file format become a globally open standard.
PKWARE continues to honor Phil Katz's vision through continuing innovation and support of the ZIP standard.

Miller Newton's experience in growing technology companies combined with his leadership style, management expertise, and marketing savvy make him the ideal person to lead PKWARE. Prior to PKWARE, Newton was Chief Executive Officer of Netkey from 2003-2009, a leading provider of applications and management software for self-service kiosks and digital signage; Netkey was acquired by NCR (NYSE: NCR). Prior to Netkey, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for Boston-based Lavastorm Technologies (now Martin Dawes Analytics) from 1999-2003, an international data analytic software company focused on improving business performance. Before Lavastorm, Newton was named Chief Executive Officer for Monster, the renowned global employment solution from 1997 - 1999. He is credited with growing the company from $400,000 to $45 million in revenue and from 50 to 230 employees. Prior to Monster, Newton was Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for TMP Worldwide, a global marketing communications company and parent company of Monster (now Monster Worldwide – NYSE MWW) from 1986 – 1999. Newton was instrumental in taking TMP Worldwide public in 1996. Newton attended the University of South Florida where he majored in Marketing and Management.
Devin Golden brings two decades worth of strategic leadership on IT business opportunities, team-building, and partner and distribution development to his position as VP of global strategic sales for PKWARE.
Devin came to PKWARE from Forrester Research where he led the North American new business team selling business solutions to executives at Fortune 1000 companies. He began his management career as part of the initial sales management team at Monster. Afterward, Devin joined Constant Contact, where he built their direct sales force from scratch, helping to turn the organization into the industry leader in email marketing for small businesses and nonprofits. He has also played a leading role in starting and nurturing new business sales teams at BzzAgent, cMarket and HubCast.
Devin earned a Bachelor of Science in Management from Boston College. Along with his wife, three daughters and a son, Devin lives west of Boston, where he’s also active in youth hockey, soccer and lacrosse.
Timothy Kohler was formerly with KPMG, both in U.S. and International offices, where he worked in Assurance Services. His responsibilities included corporate audits, consulting services, and working as a national instructor for the firm. Mr. Kohler graduated from Marquette University with a BS in Business Administration.
Jim Lewis has more than 25 years of experience managing high-profile technology companies and has served in numerous executive positions with responsibility for global sales and marketing, product development and operations. He has conducted business in 43 countries and has lived in Japan and Singapore.
His most recent positions include Senior Vice President, Global Sales & Marketing at Innodata (INOD), Executive Vice President of Netrix and founder/President of Princeton Sales Partners. Jim has also served as divisional CEO and a as member of the board of directors of Berlitz International, President of GlobalLink, an AMEX listed company, and Vice President of Marketing for MAXM Systems, a network technology company. Other positions include International Vice President at Landmark Systems, a mainframe software developer and Director of International Operations for Peter Norton Computing.
Early in his career Jim co-founded a software services company that was acquired by Ashton-Tate. Jim’s first post-college job was selling Apple computers. Jim holds a BA from St. Lawrence University in economics and government and attended the EA executive management program at Stanford.
Jim is a certified instrument-rated pilot, and is a member of Angel Flight.
Matt is a technologist at heart and has more than a decade of experience in the IT industry. In his role as VP Product Development, Matt oversees planning, development and lifecycle management for next generation PKWARE offerings including Viivo and vZip. Matt also plays a critical role in setting and driving product strategy and go-to-market activities for these products.
Prior to his current role, Matt held jobs as MIS/IT Director and IT Manager for PKWARE. Prior to PKWARE, Matt worked for Compuware and Johnson Controls. Matt graduated from Marquette University with a BS in Computer Science.
Tammy McCormack has 17 years of leadership experience with various companies in the human resources field including Target Stores, ProStaff, Michael Best & Friedrich LLP and Fidelity National Information Services. Ms. McCormack has an MA from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee.
Jim Peterson has been developing commercial software products for over 20 years. Since joining PKWARE in 1994, he has held various leadership roles in product development. He continues to drive the evolution of .ZIP technology, focusing on ensuring the ZIP format remains a secure and interoperable standard. Prior to joining PKWARE, Mr. Peterson held engineering roles at several companies where he was responsible for designing and developing healthcare management, warehouse automation, and financial accounting applications.
Joe Sturonas has been developing commercial software for over 25 years, and at PKWARE he drives technology strategy across their entire product portfolio. As Chief Technology Officer, Joe is responsible for product development, including software engineering, documentation, quality assurance and technical support. He has extensive experience in data security, data center optimization and artificial intelligence. Mr. Sturonas holds a BS degree from Miami University and an MS degree in Computer Science from DePaul University.
