The Challenge	The Card Services Division of a major U.S. bank does business through mergers and acquisitions. Mergers and acquisitions include the selling of card services portfolios; also known as conversions and de-conversions. During this process, data containing customer credit card numbers and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) needs to be transported on external tape. It is important to ensure that this information arrives at the intended location without being breached.
The Need	The bank needs to secure sensitive data in transit while keeping encryption and System Management Facility (SMF) records on the zSeries mainframe to comply with audit requirements.

When exchanging data via tape, they use passphrase encryption and when exchanging data via FTP or when exchanging large portfolios that contain millions of files, they use digital certificates, ensuring that FIPS compliance is maintained.
