Company News: PKWARE Travels the U.S., Talks Data Security at Industry Conferences

PKWARE had a busy March, exhibiting and speaking at three industry-leading events during the month: RSA® Conference 2010, SHARE in Seattle, and the 2010 FAA IT/ISS Partnership & Training Conference.

RSA Conference 2010 – San Francisco As the information security field continues to grow in importance and influence, RSA Conference plays an integral role in educating and connecting security professionals across the globe.

PKWARE annually exhibits at this premier industry conference. This year, our booth showcased how organizations can “solve their data security puzzles” by:

  • protecting sensitive data to exceed compliance requirements
  • securely exchanging PII and other sensitive data with external partners…without impacting their budgets
  • enforcing data security policies and ensuring data availability, without inhibiting business growth
  • avoiding the costs, liability, and negative publicity of a security breach

SHARE in Seattle PKWARE exhibited at SHARE in Seattle, where attendees discovered the latest trends and business solutions in the enterprise technology community. People that stopped by the PKWARE booth learned how SecureZIP® for z/OS® and PKZIP® for z/OS can improve data center operations with high performance data security and compression.

Also during SHARE, PKWARE presented a technical conference session, “Experiences with Advanced System z Cryptographic Key Protection in z/OS ICSF.” PKWARE Chief Technology Officer, Joe Sturonas, and Mike Stebner, Director of iSeries/zSeries Development, discussed how IBM Integrated Cryptographic Services Facility (ICSF), in conjunction with System z hardware, can provide durable data protection utilizing clear key, secure key, and protected key operations, and the pros and cons of advanced System z cryptographic key protection in z/OS ICSF.

FAA IT/ISS Partnership & Training Conference 2010 – Orlando This premier annual meeting of IT/ISS personnel from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DOT) focuses on the future of information systems security and information technology, as well as new initiatives within the federal government.

The PKWARE booth showcased SecureZIP solutions, with a focus on SecureZIP for Windows® desktop and SecureZIP PartnerLink™. In addition to exhibiting, PKWARE presented several workshops and information sessions during the conference. Topics included:

  • Cross-Platform Secure Data Exchange
  • Fundamentals of Protecting PII and Encrypting Files with Your HSPD-12 Credentials
  • HSPD-12: Maximizing Your Investments in PIV and CAC Through Alternative Uses
  • Tips and Shortcuts for Using SecureZIP for Windows Desktop

Industry News: More Data, More Demand on the Healthcare IT Infrastructure

According to a recent survey conducted by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), hospitals in the U.S., U.K., Canada, China, France, and Germany are unprepared for the large wave of data that will hit their data centers when new information demands become more pervasive.

Specifically in the U.S., CIOs face heightened enforcement of regulatory compliance. HIPAA and the HITECH Act demand a comprehensive plan for audit and data privacy, with fines up to $1.5 million and media notification required if protected health information is compromised. To comply with patient privacy laws and regulations mandated by the Federal government, the vast quantities of PHI, PII, and other sensitive data must be secured in order for healthcare organizations to drive revenue and continue business with government agencies.

And it’s not only exchanging files with government agencies that healthcare organizations must protect. Information exchanged between hospitals, pharmacies, claims processors, insurance providers, and other healthcare participants must also be secure. Protecting sensitive information throughout the data transfer process ensures that privacy policies and best practices are extended to an unlimited number of business associates.

Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and digital imaging will also test the storage limits and workload processes of many healthcare data centers. As the electronic health data challenge is now a reality and continues to move forward at a rapid rate, healthcare IT infrastructures must be able to handle today’s workflows and also allow capacity for tomorrow’s influx of EMR demands.

CIOs and data center directors in the healthcare industry are turning to SecureZIP® to address the increasing demands on their data centers. SecureZIP not only protects sensitive information by exceeding compliance requirements, it also reduces required storage space up to 95%.

Check out how SecureZIP helps solves data challenges facing the healthcare industry. And learn how the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is using SecureZIP to encrypt billions of health records shared with other organizations.

Topics & Trends: Data Security within the Ever-evolving Mainframe Environment

The mainframe has always been considered the heart of the data center. Today more than ever, the mainframe is central to many applications, no longer acting in isolation, but rather as an affiliate in the data transmission process. Protecting the mainframe’s data assets is critical in ensuring that valuable information won’t be lost, stolen, or exposed as it is exchanged through the mainframe’s permeable perimeters.

The progression of the mainframe in a world that demands persistent “connectedness” introduces increased risks to sensitive data stored on the mainframe. Our newest whitepaper, “Spotlight on Mainframe Security: Data Protection at the Heart of the Enterprise,” addresses the pressing need for data security within the ever-evolving mainframe environment, identifies current data center risks, and establishes controls for optimizing mainframe data security. Data-centric solutions that exceed current compliance requirements, such as SecureZIP® for z/OS®, tackle the growing security challenges facing the mainframe infrastructure.

This whitepaper is the first of several PKWARE is authoring on the subject of mainframe data security. Visit www.pkware.com/mainframedatasecurity and sign up to automatically receive additional mainframe data security white papers when they are published.
