When should I use PKZIP® for DOS versus PKZIP command line?

Even as DOS has been replaced by more advanced Windows® operating systems, many customers still rely on it for data compression. PKZIP for DOS still provides support for 16-bit environments, but as technology evolves, there are increasing limitations on using 16-bit programs such as PKZIP for DOS. Support for multi-gigabyte file sets, long filenames under Windows NTFS, and advanced data security are features that cannot be provided by PKZIP for DOS. Support for running 16-bit programs is no longer even available on 64-bit Windows.

Two PKZIP-based alternatives that run on these more complex operating systems are available from PKWARE® and offer the same trusted ZIP compression while supporting today’s processing needs. These programs include support for all of the latest features available to ZIP users. They run on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows operating systems and support compressing files that exceed 4 GB. They also include powerful command-line options for automating business processes on Windows Desktops and Servers. In addition, SecureZIP® versions provide strong encryption and digital signature features for enterprise-strength security.
