Summary

Company Background
This Law Enforcement Agency is one of the nation’s oldest and most versatile. It occupies a uniquely central position in the federal courts and is involved in virtually every federal law enforcement initiative. It is responsible for more than half of all arrests of federal fugitives, protecting the federal judiciary, operating the Witness Security Program, and transporting federal prisoners. This Law Enforcement Agency has been presidentially appointed and direct the activities of 94 districts—one for each federal judicial district.

Challenges and Requirements
The Law Enforcement Agency needs to have access to sensitive criminal and investigative data at all times. With over 6,500 desktop users in the field, the Law Enforcement Agency wanted to ensure that their data was secure regardless of the device it was stored on or where it was sent.

The Law Enforcement Agency realized they needed an encryption solution to address their security requirements for removable media, specifically USB drives and laptops--the tools field agents use to store and access data. The solution had to support cross-platform interoperability and include the ability to upgrade to PKI. While the Law Enforcement Agency has not yet deployed PKI, they are strongly considering it and wanted a solution that would provide the best value today while supporting future security upgrades.

Competitive Landscape
The Law Enforcement Agency was using WinZip® for desktop compression, but recognized that WinZip was not a viable option for data security because it does not offer strong encryption or administrative policy support for contingency keys. Since most agents were using removable media to store sensitive information, they also looked at PointSec media encryption for mobile devices, but found it extremely expensive to deploy.

The Solution - SecureZIP
SecureZIP was chosen as the best solution. SecureZIP offers strong data encryption that is interoperable across all major computing platforms and security infrastructures. In addition, it is also on the GSA schedule, which allowed the Law Enforcement Agency to expedite their purchasing process and begin securing data in the field almost immediately.
