Company Background
Our client is one of the largest pension systems in the United States, administering a basic Qualified Pension Plan as well as the largest unified Section 403(b) Tax-Deferred Annuity Program in the country. The agency serves more than 170,000 retirees and beneficiaries.
Challenges and Requirements
The agency was transferring sensitive member information to backup tapes “in the clear,” leaving the data completely vulnerable. While the agency had not experienced a breach themselves, data breach headlines regarding tape loss/theft were major drivers in their decision to initiate an encryption project. To ensure that their confidential data was secure, the agency performed an internal data classification project, via which they pinpointed 39 specific libraries that contained sensitive information that they wanted to encrypt. Competitive Landscape
The agency evaluated both Patrick Townsend and SecureZIP to provide an encryption solution for their tape backups. The Solution - SecureZIP
SecureZIP was chosen because it offered a more comprehensive product with more functionality, flexibility, and configuration options. In addition, several agency employees had used PKZIP® at previous jobs and liked the concept of using a familiar tool. The agency was able to deploy SecureZIP in a couple weeks. Not only did SecureZIP meet the agency’s need for backup tape encryption, they were also able to reduce the overall time required for the backup process by 10%, saving both time and resources. |
