Topics & Trends: Gain Control Over Encryption Solutions and Ensure Access to Encrypted Files

How much control do you have over your corporate data? Can you regulate the various encryption solutions your employees use? Better yet, do you have access to the many files they encrypt?

Many organizations find out too late that the lack of control over encryption solutions can negatively impact their business. It could be files encrypted during the normal course of business, an employee maliciously encrypting data after termination so it remains inaccessible, or a variety of other circumstances. After all, according to the 2008 CSI Computer Crime & Security Survey, 49% of survey respondents experienced financial losses due to insider attacks.

PKWARE® has worked with many organizations to address their concerns of not being able to centrally control encryption usage and retrieve previously encrypted documents, as is the case with solutions like WinZip®. And, with the recent release of Windows 7, organizations are beginning to review their desktop applications with an eye towards data loss prevention.

“Windows 7 is now here and many enterprises are beginning to think about updating their current XP builds, with part of that exercise being a reconsideration of existing applications,” explained Joe Sturonas, PKWARE Chief Technology Officer. “When evaluating a desktop encryption solution, make sure it allows you to quickly and easily access encrypted documents for audit or data recoverability purposes. Also, locking down security settings is an important consideration. This lets security professionals administer encryption, digital signature, and other data security policies from one central location.”

SecureZIP® for Windows® desktop gives organizations centralized control of end-user security policies and the ability to access encrypted files for recovery and audit purposes. One PKWARE customer removed WinZip on 380,000+ desktops because of its lack of administrative capabilities. Now, the company’s IT administrators centrally configure and control employees’ use of encryption via SecureZIP’s Policy Manager feature. In addition, Contingency Key functionality ensures that encrypted data can be accessed at any time.

Feel free to contact PKWARE if you have any specific questions about ensuring access to your encrypted files.
