Desktop Announcements
PKWARE is announcing the End of Life/End of Service for the following desktop products:
AntiVirus Integration
Various methods have been used to leverage ZIP to transmit viruses, such as including a virus within a ZIP archive or including an executable file that will then download a virus from another location. In some instances the virus will attempt to mask itself from being scanned at the Gateway by password-protecting the ZIP file attachment, with the password included within the email message.
A common response to these threats has been to block ZIP archives from entering the email gateway. However, ZIP fulfills a critical enterprise need by helping reduce network load and storage requirements. Fortunately, there is a way to maintain the use of ZIP files that, along with user education, ensures that files do not contain harmful content and come from trusted senders.
PKWARE has and is continuing to work closely with leading AV vendors to ensure that their products — both at the Gateway as well as the Desktop — can scan ZIP files to ensure the contents are safe. We have also provided the ability for organizations and their partners to digitally sign ZIP archives to ensure that they have been sent from a trusted source. In addition, most AV desktop products can be configured to automatically scan files “on access” whenever they are opened from the Desktop.
